Ten Myths About Internet Marketing

Success is a critical component in any business and that starts with the right frame-of-mind. Often times there are many industry misconceptions, ultimately resulting in ‘myths.’ Without sounding to forward, we have compiled a list of the top 10 myths we have come across when we have consulted with our potential prospects and clients.

1. Information Sells Products/Services

Having information on specific products/services is a critical component to any website. However, copy must be artfully crafted providing an emotional response, and more importantly a story behind a centralized message. Information presented in this manner allows for conversions upon any given website.

2. Search Marketing Is The Past, Social Media Is Now

Organic search results still matter, even with the progression of social media. Organizations that experience top ranking for selected niche keywords, out perform many other sites. According to research by the Jupiter Group and the NPD Group, 70 percent of Internet users said they clicked a search result within the first page of results, and 92 percent clicked a result within the first three pages of search results.

3. If I Want Business, It Does Not Come From A Website

There are instances where having a web presence may or may not tailor an ROI driven result. Those organizations have a tendency for extreme specialization. However, with the digital landscape changing, more and more niche markets are emerging. Those niches are searching for potential solution providers. Before making the judgement call, be sure you have a comprehensive understanding or your niche market and those who are searching for it online.

4. You Do Not Need Any Money To Do An Internet Business

It is true, there are plenty of free advertising verticals on the Internet, but keep in mind those also take much time and consistent work to actualize an ROI. Advertising in any form always cost a percentage of sales for both small businesses and enterprises. It is highly regarded and used, because it can work if it is executed properly.

5. Internet is about Getting Rich Quick

Unfortunately there are more individuals who fail at Internet Marketing than actually succeed. There is an industry hype of individuals who came onto the Internet and within a short period of time made a significant sum of income. While those occurrences are possible, they also require proper strategy, implementation, and flawless execution. Those are the factors that people rarely discuss with you.

6. Internet Marketing Is Easy

As more and more organizations utilize the Internet as a form of advertising and exposure to their business, it becomes difficult to market a brand online. Numerous organizations are trying to communicate to any given market on Twitter and Facebook all while jumping natural search rankings. Proper strategy and execution is required on all levels for success.

7. E-Mail Marketing Is The Wave of the Past

With the rise of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn – there is speculation that E-Mail is dead. More and more individuals prefer the communication abilities of a social network. While there is a social network preference, e-mail is still a large communication hub. Notice large organizations working to capture a large list of email opt-ins. Simply because it works and produces results for numerous strategy driven marketing programs.

8. My Client Base Is Not On The Internet

More than often, than not there are always going to be business owners who do not understand their true target market. There are questions that people often forget to ask, such as: Who is their buyer? What is their purchasing behavior? What is the age demographic? What are the different types of ethnicities that are visiting my website? Finally, what types of website do they visit on a consistent basis? Understanding the critical points of your demographic/psychographic can help you achieve success online. Find out where your target market congregates, and be sure to place your efforts there.

9. We Don’t Sell Online and Don’t Need Internet Marketing

The digital landscape has truly changed how business is conducted on a day-to-day basis. It has also changed the true spirit of entrepreneurs, allowing for a new generation of thinkers to engage with a highly captive audience. Not selling online or having a web presence can drastically reduce your organizations reach and exposure levels. Consider what business you are loosing to your competitors by not being there.

10. Lots of Traffic To My Site Will Boost My Business

Web traffic is something every website aims for as a ‘goal.’ However, the quality of targeted traffic in your product/service is the integral component to the success of your website. Highly targeted qualified traffic improves conversion rates and the success of the site/brand.

Your static website can only say so much without becoming bloated and busy. Having a blog on your site allows you to neatly organize any information you want, and lets you have infinite space for all of those nice case studies you would love to include on your website. Case studies are a powerful way to showcase your company’s hard work and shouldn’t be gathering dust – they should be on display for the world (and potential new clients) to see.
